How to Tell if Your Ski-Doo Snowmobile is on an XM or XP Chassis
Between 2008 and 2016, Ski-Doo used the XP and XM chassis across several popular models. These platforms are known for their lightweight design, off-trail agility, and distinctive style compared to earlier generations.
With the introduction of the Gen4 chassis starting in 2017 on certain models, it can sometimes be tricky to determine which platform your snowmobile uses. Here are some key points to help you figure it out.
✅ 1. Check the Year and Model
XP models appeared in 2008 and were produced up until 2012 in most lineups.
XM models took over from 2013 to 2016, offering upgrades in suspension and riding position.
Starting in 2017, several Ski-Doo models switched to the Gen4 chassis, but some models kept the XM chassis for one or two more seasons depending on the lineup.
✅ 2. Visual Clues
XP: More angular design, narrower tunnel, running boards with smaller openings.
XM: More open running boards for better snow clearance, slightly redesigned windshield, improved tMotion suspension.
✅ 3. Models Typically on XP Chassis (2008–2012)
Summit XP
MXZ XP
Renegade XP
GSX XP
✅ 4. Models Typically on XM Chassis (2013–2016, and some until 2018)
Summit XM
Freeride XM
Renegade Backcountry XM
Expedition Sport XM (depending on the year)
